Writing Critique Classes

Frequently, parents tell me that I have a different approach to teaching writing. I agree with them.

Over the past decade, I have made countless observations related to writing instruction. I have seen firsthand what works and what doesn't.

Consistently, I have seen that writing instruction needs to be broken down into components, and the foundational ones (i.e., spelling, grammar, and editing) need to be taught before tackling the more advanced ones (e.g., paragraph and essay construction), or the instruction will be ineffective, and students will go in circles with their writing, wasting valuable time.

I have also seen the benefits that critique classes offer: They expose students to others' writing ideas; give students an opportunity to independently apply the information they have learned in foundational writing classes; place students outside of their comfort zones, where real growth happens; and ultimately allow students to become better writers.

With that being said, I am thrilled to be able to offer multiple Writing Critique classes weekly, starting in January:

  • Tuesdays, 5:00–6:25 p.m. PT

  • Wednesdays, 5:00–6:25 p.m. PT

  • Thursdays, 5:00–6:25 p.m. PT
