Writing & Organizational Skills
Writing requires a tremendous amount of organization. Through my years of teaching writing, I have made a regular observation: organized students are better writers and learn new writing skills more quickly than students who are not. That said, I would estimate that at least 90 percent of my students (some more so than others) could benefit from consistently developing their organizational skills.
During private writing classes, we don't have time to delve into developing this skill set as much as is needed. However, for May, I am going to have all private-class students who have not been staying on top managing their “Materials to Print” folders in Google Drive work on doing so for their monthly goal for May.
Managing the Drive folders is a great organizational exercise for students in fourth grade and higher and helps them be prepared for class and get more out of their instruction time with me; it also fosters independence, which is an important educational skill, too.
