Kindness & Writing

One word has been consuming my thoughts lately: “kindness.” It is a simple word, but kindness itself is so powerful because it can make someone's day, just as unkindness can break someone's day.

In an effort to divert my attention away from the unkind acts that I seem to encounter everywhere these days, I have made a "Kind Acts" list and hung it like a piece of artwork on my refrigerator in my home. On that list are recent kind acts that I have done for people as well as ones people have done for me. The list helps remind me of what has made my days special and, in turn, encourages me to be a kinder person.

All of the bullet points on my Kind Acts list are actions except for one—that one reads "Leire." Leire is the mom of one of my third-grade students. She is the most genuinely kind person I have ever known. Every interaction I have had with her, whether via email or Zoom, in person, or on the phone, has left me feeling better than I did before it.

Recently when Leire was picking her son up from one of his Spelling classes with me, she told me that I am an inspiration. I think that she is an inspiration: an inspiration for me and everyone she interacts with to be kinder people, which the world undoubtedly needs more of these days.

So, thank you, Leire, for your kindness and helping make our world a place all beings want to live in; I am blessed to have you in my life.
