“Summer Writing”

“Summer writing.” When I typed that phrase in Google Search, the following list appeared:

Google Search

  • summer writing programs for high school students

  • summer writing camps

  • summer writing workshops

  • summer writing programs

  • summer writing camps for middle schoolers

  • summer writing internships

  • summer writing programs for elementary students

  • summer writing residencies

  • summer writing programs for college students

Summer is a time that people tend to prioritize writing, which in some regards make sense because learning how to write is inarguably a time-consuming process, and most people have more free time during the summer. That said, learning how to write is not something that should be prioritized only during the summer: it should be prioritized year-round, and extra time should be dedicated to that process during the summer when a more relaxed schedule allows for additional strides to be made with writing.

I have seen a lot of businesses tout “summer writing ________,” but I have always forged my own path with writing instruction and held true to what I believe in: effective writing instruction is ongoing—not “summer only.” I have never offered summer only classes. I offer all of my classes year-round and offer students the option to take more classes during the summer when their schedules allow them do so.

As much as I would like to believe that a student can make significant strides with writing in a couple of months, that is, unfortunately, not the case. Learning how to write is an ongoing process, and the students who are committed to that process become the best writers.
