Hitting the Reset Button

The beginning of a new year is a great time to hit the reset button and make small changes that will have a positive impact on our lives during not only the current year but also subsequent years.

One small yet impactful change that I would love to see all elementary, middle, and high school students make this month is to add designated homework and study time to their monthly calendar (just like they add extracurricular activities to their monthly calendar) and stay consistent with that schedule (e.g., Mondays through Thursdays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.).

Over the years, I have observed that for most students homework and studying are afterthoughts: students complete their homework and study when they have “extra” time to do so, which often results in their homework not being completed, being partially completed, or being sloppily completed. It also often results in students being underprepared for assessments.

Academic-related tasks, like work world-related tasks, should not be afterthoughts—they should be priorities. Just as we as parents add work-related tasks to our calendars, our children should be adding academic-related tasks to theirs.

Helping our children establish efficient and effective homework and study routines now will help set them up for success now and in the future. Organizational and time management skills and consistency are so important for overall success, both at school and at work.
