Writing Revisions

One topic that came up frequently during the most recent complimentary parent check-in phone calls was revisions: students are not putting enough time into them and doing them at the last minute.

Students need to work on revisions at least twice a week and do their first round of them by the Sunday before their next Writing Critique class so that class discussions and recommendations are fresh in their minds. Their second round of revisions should be completed between Monday and their next critique class.

The more students revise their prewriting and drafts between classes (my classes or school classes), the better their published drafts will become and the better writers they will become. The revision sessions between classes do not need to be very long, 30 minutes can be sufficient, but they need to be frequent.

Just last week, while I was waiting for a student to join his writing class after the class start time, I went into his homework folder, and I saw that he was in Google Drive working on his first round of revisions! Unfortunately, he is not the only student I have seen do this.

If students can establish regular days to complete their revisions and follow through on completing them on those days or reschedule with themselves when needed, it will make a noticeable positive difference in their writing, grades on school written assignments, and overall writing progress.

Writing, unfortunately, cannot be crammed for or completed in a rushed manner without compromising its quality.
